Nature & Neuroscience
This educational resource was inspired by an expedition to Antarctica with National Geographic and Lindblad Expeditions as part of the Grosvenor Teacher Fellowship. It was sparked by a curiosity to see how the brain is impacted by the vast and remote polar landscape.
About the Student Action pRoject
How does the sensation of awe experienced in the expansive and vast polar desert landscape affect brain waves and trigger activation in various brain lobes? How do the realms of nature and neuroscience intertwine with our mental well-being and physical health? Utilizing portable EEG technology during a two-week expedition with National Geographic and Lindblad Expeditions in Antarctica, these questions were explored through real-time whole brain sensing.
A series of four lessons were developed to disseminate the findings and to encourage students to likewise create their own brain study. By understanding the correlation between nature and the mind and fostering a deeper connection with the natural world, students can be inspired to care more profoundly about our planet, investigate issues concerning nature and mental health, and become stewards of the Earth.

Democratizing Neuroscience Research
When students have access to EEG headsets and can visualize their brain waves in real-time, it revolutionizes their engagement with neuroscience. Suddenly, what was once an abstract concept becomes tangible and accessible. This experience sparks curiosity and ignites a passion for understanding the inner workings of the brain.
By providing access to technology traditionally restricted to academia, students are empowered to explore and participate in neuroscience research regardless of their academic background. By breaking down barriers and making neuroscience accessible, EEG technology transforms students into active participants in the scientific process, fostering a generation of curious and informed minds.
